ToolboxPrep is an independent study site. This page says plainly where our questions come from, and where they do not.
01ToolboxPrep is independent
ToolboxPrep is a study site run by Trevor Mulder, a small business in Alberta, Canada. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or approved by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), ASE’s test delivery provider, or any school or training provider. ToolboxPrep is not an Officially Licensed ASE Test Prep Partner, and it is not ASE-accredited, ASE-approved or “ASE-certified” training (ASE certifies technicians, not products).
02Our questions are original
Every question, answer and explanation on ToolboxPrep is original work written for ToolboxPrep. We write from public sources: the test specifications, task lists and study guides ASE publishes for each test; manufacturers’ published service information; SAE standards and federal regulations, cited by number; and standard automotive service references. Each question records the task and source it was written from. Questions are drafted with AI tools and checked against those sources in a separate, blind pass; how our questions are made explains the method.
03They are not ASE test questions, and not dumps
Our questions are not the questions on any ASE test, and they are not copies, paraphrases or reconstructions of ASE test questions. ToolboxPrep does not have, seek, buy, accept or use actual test questions; questions remembered by people who took a test (“recalled” or “brain dump” questions); leaked or confidential test material; or questions from other prep sites, apps, books or courses. ASE’s sample questions in its study guides show the formats ASE uses; we write our own questions in those formats and never reuse ASE’s samples.
04ASE reference booklets
The L1 and L3 tests come with reference material that ASE publishes free for candidates (for L1, the Composite Vehicle Type 4 reference booklet). Some of our L1 and L3 questions ask you to use that material, as the test does. We link to ASE’s own copy; we do not reproduce it.
05If you think a question came from a test
Email support@toolboxprep.com with the question ID from the top of the card. We take the question down while we check it, and remove it for good if we cannot show the public source it was written from. Please do not send us test content: ASE’s test center policies exist to safeguard the test questions.
06Trademarks
ASE, the ASE logo, ASE Certified and the Blue Seal of Excellence are trademarks of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. We use “ASE” and the test names and codes (such as “A5 Brakes”) only to say which test our material helps you study for. We never use the ASE logo or Blue Seal, and naming a test is not a claim that ASE approves of us. Vehicle and product names belong to their owners.
07Standards and service information are cited, not reproduced
SAE standards are copyrighted by SAE International, and service information by the vehicle and equipment manufacturers. We cite them by number and explain what they require in our own words; no standard’s text or table is reproduced.
08No promise of a result
ToolboxPrep is a study aid. A practice score is our estimate of where you stand, not a prediction of your test result, and we do not promise that you will pass. The pass guarantee extends your access if you don’t pass; it is not a promise of a result and not a refund. ASE sets its test rules, fees and formats and can change them. ASE’s is the final word.
