ToolboxPrep is an independent study site for the ASE certification tests, starting with the Automobile series (A1 to A8) and G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair. The full list is on all tests. This page says who is behind it, how the questions are made, and what to do if you find something wrong.
01Who runs ToolboxPrep
ToolboxPrep is built and run by Trevor Mulder, its founder. It is a small, independent business based in Alberta, Canada, with no connection to ASE, any test provider or any training school.
Before ToolboxPrep, Trevor built TicketPrep.ca, a practice-question site for Canadian Red Seal trade exams, including the 310S Automotive Service Technician exam. That work taught one lesson that carries straight over: practice only tells you something real when it is built the way the test is built. ToolboxPrep applies the same method to the ASE tests.
Trevor is not an automotive technician, and the site does not pretend otherwise. That is why every question is tied to a public source you can check yourself: the test specification and task list ASE publishes for each test, and the standard service practice a fact comes from.
02Why ToolboxPrep exists
Most ASE prep is either a monthly subscription or a single official practice test. We wanted something in between: a large bank of questions for each test, every answer explained, timed practice tests laid out like the real one, and one payment instead of a subscription. A Test Pass covers one test; All Tests covers every test we offer, for technicians working toward several certifications or ASE Master status.
03How the questions are built
Every question is tied to one task on the published task list for its ASE test, and timed practice tests draw from each content area in the proportions the ASE test specification sets. Each question has four options and one correct answer, and explains why every option is right or wrong. The bank uses the same formats the official study guides show, including "Technician A says… Technician B says…" and EXCEPT questions. Measurements are in US units (inches, psi, °F, ft-lb).
The full method, step by step, is on how our questions are made.
04How AI is used
Questions are drafted with AI language models, working from the ASE task list and standard service references. They are then checked in a separate, blind pass, also run with AI models: the checker answers each question without seeing the key, the answer is worked out again from the source, figures and calculations are redone, and each wrong option is confirmed to be genuinely wrong. A question that cannot be traced to a source is rewritten or held back.
We say this plainly because you should know how a study tool is made before you trust it. What makes a question reliable is that it can be checked against a published source, not the tool used to write it, and that is also what lets anyone check our work.
05Outside review
We are building a panel of ASE-certified technicians to review questions in the areas they are certified in. Reviewers are credited on this page by name, if they want to be. If you hold current ASE certifications and would like to help, email support@toolboxprep.com with your certifications and where you work. Reviewers get free All Tests access for as long as they are reviewing.
06Mistakes and corrections
If you think a question is wrong, tell us. Use the contact page and choose "Report a question error", or email support@toolboxprep.com with the question's ID from the top of the card. Every report is checked against the source. If the question is wrong, it is fixed and the change is recorded with the question.
07What ToolboxPrep is not
ToolboxPrep is an independent study site. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by ASE (the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Our questions are original practice questions written to the published ASE test specifications; they are not actual test questions. We have no access to real test questions, and we do not sell, reproduce or paraphrase them. We do not publish pass rates we cannot back up, and we do not promise a result on test day. The test measures what you know; practice shows you where you stand.
08How the site is paid for
A lot of ToolboxPrep is free with no account: free practice questions for every test with every answer explained, a sample quiz for each test, and the guides on how the ASE tests work. The full question banks are paid: a Test Pass is $29 for one test and All Tests is $69 for every test, both one-time payments for 120 days of access, not subscriptions. If it isn't the right fit, the refund policy gives your money back in full within 7 days of purchase. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never receive or store your full card number.
How we handle your information is set out in the privacy policy.
