ToolboxPrep is an independent, founder-run study site. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by ASE, and we do not have access to real test questions. What we do have is a method, and this page explains it so you can judge for yourself what a practice score here is worth.
01The map: the task list
For every test, ASE publishes a task list in its official study guide: the jobs a technician should be able to do, grouped into content areas, from diagnosis to repair. That task list is the map for our bank. Every question we publish is tied to one task on the list for its test, and every content area on the list has questions written to it. On public pages we describe the tasks in our own words; we never copy ASE's text.
02The weighting: the test specification
The same study guide gives each test a test specification: how many scored questions come from each content area. We use those counts as the blueprint for every timed practice test. A practice A4 Suspension and Steering test, for example, draws 12 questions on steering, 12 on suspension, 11 on wheel alignment and 5 on wheels and tires, because that is ASE's published breakdown for A4, not because those are the questions we happened to have. The real test adds 10 unscored questions; our timed practice tests serve the scored part, with the same time limit.
03How a question is written
A question starts from a task and the knowledge it calls for. The stem describes a situation in the shop: a symptom, a test reading, a customer concern. There are four options and one correct answer. The three wrong options are written to be the plausible wrong instinct, not obviously absurd, and each carries its own explanation of why it is wrong. That is why every question on ToolboxPrep explains all four answers, not just the right one.
The bank uses the formats ASE's study guides show: one-best-answer questions, "Technician A says… Technician B says… Who is right?", and EXCEPT or LEAST likely questions. Measurements are in US units (inches, psi, °F, ft-lb), and parts and tools carry the names used in US shops.
04How a question is checked: blind
Drafting and checking are separate passes, and both are run with AI language models (more on how we use AI). The check is blind: the checker answers each question without seeing our key, and any question where its answer and our key disagree is pulled for a rewrite. The checker also works from the source rather than the draft: figures a technician could be tested on are confirmed, calculations are redone, and each wrong option is checked to be genuinely wrong, with an explanation that says why.
Where a value is set by the vehicle manufacturer rather than by a general standard (a torque figure, a clearance, a pressure), the question supplies the value and tests the method, the way ASE questions do, so nobody is asked to memorize a number that changes from vehicle to vehicle. A question that cannot be traced to a source is rewritten or held back. When a check finds an error in a published question, we correct it and record what changed.
05Two levels, one blueprint
Each test's bank has two levels. Standard questions are set at the level of the real test, in the same mix of formats. Advanced questions are harder diagnostic cases with more steps to reason through, for when your Standard scores are consistently strong. Both levels follow the same test specification weighting.
06What we don't do
We do not sell, reproduce or paraphrase real ASE test questions; anyone who does is breaking ASE's rules, and using them can cost you your certification. We do not publish pass-rate claims we cannot back up. We do not claim that practicing here guarantees a result on test day: the test measures what you know, and practice shows you where you stand.
ToolboxPrep is an independent study site. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by ASE (the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Our questions are original practice questions written to the published ASE test specifications; they are not actual test questions.
07When a test changes
ASE revises its tests and study guides on its own schedule. When the task list or test specification for one of our tests changes, we re-check the map, the weighting and every question tied to a changed task, and note the edition on the test's study guide page.
08Found a mistake?
If you think a question is wrong, tell us. Use the contact page and choose "Report a question error", or email support@toolboxprep.com. Include the question's ID from the top of the card (for example A5-C-012). We check it against the source and, if it is wrong, fix it, and the fix is recorded with the question.
09ASE-certified technicians: review our questions
If you hold current ASE certifications and would like to review questions in your areas, we would like to hear from you. Email support@toolboxprep.com with your certifications and where you work. Reviewers get free All Tests access for as long as they are reviewing and, if they want it, a credit on our about page.
