22 free IBEW aptitude test practice questions in our quiz app: 10 Algebra and Functions questions and 2 full reading passages with all 12 of their questions. There is nothing to sign up for. Every answer is explained, including why each wrong option is wrong.
01The free quiz
- 10 math questions across the question types: evaluating formulas, equivalent expressions, number series, inequalities, tables and more.
- 2 reading passages, whole. Each passage comes with all six of its questions, as a passage would on the test, with numbered paragraphs.
- Standard level. The free questions are at the level of the test. The Advanced questions are in the full bank.
02How to take it
The real test gives you 33 questions in 46 minutes for math and 36 questions in 51 minutes for reading: about 85 seconds a question. Try the free set at that pace, about 31 minutes for all 22, on paper and without a calculator. Then go through every explanation, right answers included, and note which question types cost you points.

Which expression is the factored form of x² + 2x - 35?
- (x - 7)(x + 5)
- (x + 7)(x - 5)
- (x + 7)(x + 5)
- (x + 35)(x - 1)
Show the answer
B. Correct. 7 and -5 multiply to -35 and add to 2, so (x + 7)(x - 5) = x² + 2x - 35.
Why not the others
A. The numbers -7 and 5 multiply to -35 but add to -2, so this expands to x² - 2x - 35.
C. Ignores the minus sign on 35; this expands to x² + 12x + 35.
D. 35 and -1 multiply to -35 but add to 34, so this expands to x² + 34x - 35.

What number comes next in this series? 4, 12, 36, 108, ...
- 180
- 216
- 252
- 324
Show the answer
D. Correct. Each term is 3 times the one before, so 108 × 3 = 324.
Why not the others
A. Adds 72, the last gap, again; the gaps 8, 24, 72 also triple, so the terms multiply by 3.
B. Doubles 108 instead of tripling it; every term is 3 times the one before (12 = 3 × 4).
C. Adds twice the last gap (2 × 72 = 144); the terms grow by a factor of 3, not by doubling the gap.

Solve: 4x + 7 < 31
- x < 6
- x > 6
- x < 9.5
- x < 20
Show the answer
A. Correct. Subtract 7 from both sides: 4x < 24. Divide by 4: x < 6.
Why not the others
B. Reverses the inequality. Dividing by a positive number (4) keeps the < sign.
C. Adds 7 to 31 instead of subtracting it: 4x < 38 gives x < 9.5.
D. After 4x < 24, subtracts 4 instead of dividing by 4.

An apprentice installs 18 receptacles in 4 hours. Working at the same rate, how many hours will it take to install 45 receptacles?
- 10
- 11.25
- 31
- 202.5
Show the answer
A. Correct. The rate is 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 receptacles per hour, so 45 ÷ 4.5 = 10 hours (or 45/18 × 4 = 10).
Why not the others
B. Divides 45 by the 4 hours, mixing up the units; that is not a time.
C. Adds the 27 extra receptacles to the 4 hours as if each took one hour; the rate is 4.5 per hour.
D. Sets up the proportion upside down (45 × 18 ÷ 4); hours must match hours: 45/18 × 4 = 10.
