ASE charges $62 for each certification test plus a $34 registration fee for each order. One test on its own costs $96. Because the registration fee is charged per order, not per test, adding tests to the same order adds $62 each: two tests cost $158, three cost $220, and all eight Master Technician tests (A1 to A8) in one order cost $530. Booked in eight separate orders, the same eight tests would cost $768. You register and pay through ase.com, where ASE posts the current registration and scheduling dates. If you do not pass, you wait 30 days before retesting. A certification lasts 5 years, then you renew it with a shorter recertification test. Fees can change, so check ase.com before you book.
01What does an ASE test cost?
Two fees make up the price: $62 for each test you book and $34 for each registration order. The table shows what an order costs at different sizes, all on the same arithmetic.
| In one order | Working | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 test | 1 × $62 + $34 | $96 |
| 2 tests | 2 × $62 + $34 | $158 |
| 3 tests | 3 × $62 + $34 | $220 |
| 4 tests | 4 × $62 + $34 | $282 |
| 8 tests | 8 × $62 + $34 | $530 |
Booking the eight A1 to A8 tests in eight separate orders would cost 8 × $96 = $768, which is $238 more than one order of eight, all of it repeated registration fees. You do not have to be ready for every test at once to save: any tests you group into one order share a single registration fee.
02Worked examples
A technician who wants brakes and suspension and steering (A5 and A4) and books both together pays 2 × $62 + $34 = $158. Booking them months apart, in two orders, costs 2 × $96 = $192, a difference of $34.
A technician who passes G1 and later adds A5 pays $96 for each order, $192 in all. Someone who books A1 and A8 together, since the two share their engine tests, pays $158.
A retest is the one cost you control most directly through preparation: a failed test means the 30-day wait and, at minimum, the $62 test fee again.
03What about the L-series tests?
ASE's advanced level tests (the L-series) are outside this site, which covers A1 to A8 and G1. Our sources do not give their fees, so check ase.com for what an L-series test costs.
04How do you register?
You register and pay through ase.com. ASE sets the registration and scheduling dates, so check ase.com for the current dates before you plan your study around a test date.
No separate registration is needed for the Spanish option: the Leer en español button is available inside the Automobile tests and G1. ASE also has a free demo of its testing platform at ase.com/free-test-drive.
Remember the second half of certification. ASE requires documented relevant work experience on top of a pass, and says suitable vocational training can be credited toward it. The details are at workexp.ase.com, and they are worth reading before you pay, so you know what you will need to show.
05What does a retest cost?
If you do not pass, ASE makes you wait 30 days before you can take the same test again. The fees above are per test and per order, and ASE's study guides do not describe any retest discount, so plan on paying for the test again and confirm on ase.com. Rebooking a retest together with another test you were planning anyway means the two share one $34 registration fee.
06What about recertification?
An ASE certification lasts 5 years. To keep it, you take a recertification test, which is shorter than the original: for example 23 questions in 30 minutes for A1 against 45 scored questions in 75 minutes for the full test. Our sources do not give separate recertification fees, so check ase.com for what a recertification order costs. You are eligible for a recertification test only after passing the matching certification test once.
Recertification test lengths for every test are listed in how ASE tests work.
07How do you keep the cost down?
Only the arithmetic above is certain, but it points to three habits. First, group tests you are ready for into one order, since each extra order adds $34. Second, book a test when you have worked through its whole task list, because a retest costs the $62 test fee again and 30 days. Third, check ase.com for the current fees and registration dates before you order, since both can change.
Each of our study guides lists a test's content areas and task list in plain words, which is the quickest way to judge whether you are ready: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, G1.
08Before you pay: a short checklist
- Confirm the current fee per test and registration fee on ase.com.
- Check the current registration and scheduling dates on ase.com.
- Read the work experience rules at workexp.ase.com, so you know what you will need to document.
- Decide which tests to group into one order.
- Work through each test's task list and sample questions, and try ASE's platform demo.
09Questions people ask
- How much does an ASE test cost?
- $62 per test plus a $34 registration fee per order, so one test on its own is $96. Each extra test in the same order adds $62. Check ase.com, since fees can change.
- How much does it cost to take all eight ASE A-series tests?
- $530 if you book A1 to A8 in one order: 8 × $62 plus one $34 registration fee. Booked in eight separate orders, the same tests cost $768.
- Is the ASE registration fee charged for every test?
- No. The $34 registration fee is charged once per order, and each test in the order costs $62. Two tests in one order cost $158; the same two tests in two separate orders cost $192.
- How long do I have to wait to retake an ASE test?
- 30 days. ASE makes you wait 30 days before you can take a test you did not pass again, and the retest is a new booking, so check ase.com for the fees.
- How long is an ASE certification good for?
- 5 years. After that you renew it by passing a shorter recertification test, which you can take only after passing the full certification test once.
